Soldier fractured comrade's cheekbone by punching him in furious rage after he threw a sausage through his bedroom window in Grange Hill-style prank

A soldier fractured a comrade's cheekbone by punching him in a furious rage after he threw a sausage through his bedroom window in a Grange Hill-style prank.

Lance Corporal Shaun Integrity, 32, was demoted and jailed after he lost his temper when the sausage was launched through his window during a barracks barbecue, in an incident reminiscent of the famous opening sequence of the eighties BBC kids show - during which a sausage on a fork is hurled across a room.

Integrity, who appealed his conviction earlier this week, had been drinking with others at Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (REME) barracks in Hampshire in July 2022, but had gone back to his room when the banger flew in from outside late at night.

Furious, he went downstairs to confront the culprit, and punched Craftsman Rowan Young so hard that it smashed his cheekbone in several places.

Integrity, a soldier in the 14th Armoured Company REME, was convicted at a court martial in March last year for assault occasioning actual bodily harm and was sentenced to 90 days' service detention.

He was also busted down to the rank of private and ordered to pay £750 compensation to his sausage-throwing comrade.

This week, he challenged his conviction, but three senior judges sitting at the Court of Appeal in London rejected his 'unarguable' case.

Giving judgment, Lady Justice Macur said Integrity was at Delhi Barracks, Tidworth, when the incident happened.

At around 10pm, Craftsman Young, who had been drinking, and others were outside the accommodation block, egging each other on to throw items from the barbecue.

'Craftsman Young decided that it would be funny to throw a sausage into the window of a nearby room in the block,' she said.

'He then proceeded to throw it into Shaun Integrity's room.'

Enraged, Integrity went downstairs, walked up to Craftsman Young and 'punched him once to the left side of the face.'

'This was a punch that caused significant damage,' she said, with Craftsman Young left nursing 'multiple fractures' to his face.

Despite that, he went up to Integrity's room and apologised for throwing the sausage.

The attack was reported, with Craftsman Young later describing being struck with a 'right hook' while he stood with his arms by his side and not moving.

At his trial, Integrity claimed self-defence, saying he had felt surrounded by others outside and that he struck out when Craftsman Young made a quick move.

But he was convicted and sentenced to time in custody and a reduction in rank.

At the Court of Appeal, his lawyers argued that the conviction was 'arguably unsafe' because of the way the court martial board were directed about how to consider his self-defence claim.

Upholding the conviction, Lady Justice Macur, Mr Justice Jay and Mrs Justice Foster said nothing had gone wrong at the trial.

'The appellant conceded that the punch caused significant injuries,' she concluded.
