The BBC has confirmed Not Going Out is returning for a brand new series in 2025.

Lee Mack, who will host the third season finale of ITV gameshow The 1% Club this weekend, is ‘very grateful’ to be bringing back his iconic sitcom for its 14th series.

He said in a statement: ‘Once again I’m very grateful that the BBC have trusted in us to keep alive the studio sitcom.

‘I grew up watching this genre of sitcom on the BBC, and to be part of it myself is still a dream come true, even after 18 years of doing it. Here we go again…!!’

The show – which first aired in 2006 – is the longest running UK sitcom currently on air, and in the all-time rankings it’s second only to Last of the Summer Wine in numbers of series.

Meanwhile, the 2023 Christmas special marked its 100th episode, meaning Not Going Out is part of an elite group of sitcom centenarians.

The show stars Lee as a fictionalised version of himself, while Sally Bretton plays Lucy, and a host of top stars have been key cast members over the years.

The likes of Hugh Dennis, Abigail Cruttenden, Bobby Ball, Megan Dodds, Miranda Hart, Deborah Grant, Tim Vine, Geoffrey Whitehead, Timothy West and Katy Wix have all starred in the show.

Jon Petrie, Director of Comedy at the BBC, said: ‘Not Going Out remains one of the UK’s most cherished sitcoms, a true testament to the exceptional comedic talents of Lee and his team.

‘The show’s consistent success and popularity speak volumes, and we are beyond chuffed about its return.’

And Jon Thoday, Executive Producer at Avalon, added: ‘We are delighted to see the BBC keep the fire of the studio sitcom alive and it is a privilege to work with Lee Mack, who is a true master of his craft, as well as the excellent team on the show.’

Alongside Ghosts, Not Going Out was in the top two most watched comedies on iPlayer over the last 12 months, with last year’s festive special averaging 4.6 million viewers.

Fans were devastated last month when Lee confirmed there would be no episodes in 2024, as he suggested the decision was made above his paygrade.

Speaking about his upcoming projects, Lee, 55, said: ‘More 1% Club, more Would I Lie to You? and, for the first year in a long time, I won’t be doing Not Going Out.’

He did give some hope for the future, teasing that everyone involved was ‘looking at early 2025’ for a return.

‘We’re talking about it now. I’d love to do more, I love doing it, it’s great fun, I love the cast but it’s not always my decision, these things,’ he told The Sun.

Thankfully, the bosses have made the right call, and fans can look forward to more next year.

Not Going Out is available to watch on BBC iPlayer.
