Why West Ham should be worried about Lucas Paqueta's charges - Kynan Isaac was banned for 10 YEARS for spot fixing and Bradley Wood couldn't play for six years after FA Cup offences

West Ham star Lucas Paqueta faces the prospect of a lengthy ban after the Football Association alleged he deliberately picked up bookings to affect the betting market.

Four yellow cards received by the Brazilian in Premier League matches over the past two seasons triggered suspicious betting patterns.

If precedent is anything to go by, Paqueta could be banned for years if found guilty of the charges.

Non-league footballer Kynan Isaac was banned from football for 10 years in October 2022 for deliberately getting booked in an FA Cup tie as part of a betting scheme with friends.

Lincoln City defender Bradley Wood received a six-year ban in 2018 for 'influencing a football betting market' by collecting two yellow cards during the Imps' famous FA Cup run in 2016-17.

These examples show the FA aren't afraid to hand out tough punishments to those found guilty of spot-fixing.

Defender Isaac was playing for Southern League club Stratford Town in an FA Cup first round tie against EFL club Shrewsbury Town in November 2021.

He was shown a yellow card for a high tackle in the 83rd minute during a 5-1 defeat for his side.

The FA found Isaac guilty of 'influencing a football betting market by intentionally seeking to be cautioned by the match referee' and found evidence of collusion with friends.

Given Stratford play in the seventh tier of the English pyramid, their matches would not ordinarily be open to such betting markets.

But this FA Cup tie was broadcast live by ITV, meaning bookmakers were offering odds on individual players being cautioned.

In one interview with the FA during their investigation, Isaac described himself as someone who 'plays on the edge' and doesn't mind things 'getting a bit tasty'.

Referee Ben Toner, having later watched Isaac's tackle back afterwards, concluded it should actually have been a red card instead of a yellow.

In addition to the 10-year ban from football for this offence, Isaac was given a fourth 18-month suspension for placing 347 bets on matches over a five year period while playing at various clubs.

A further 12 months were added because Isaac didn't co-operate fully with the FA probe despite pleading not guilty, leading to a ban from football until April 2034.

Wood was given a six-year ban for committing 25 breaches of FA integrity and betting rules.

A tribunal the defender, then 26, 'influenced a football betting market' by getting booked in Lincoln's FA Cup third round replay win over Ipswich in January 2017 and their fifth-round win over Premier League Burnley the following month.

Lincoln, members of the fifth-tier National League at the time, made the quarter-finals before losing 5-0 at Arsenal.

Two people known to Wood placed bets on both matches that betting firms said were 'atypical in the context of the caution betting market' with their winnings amounting to roughly £10,000.

Wood denied the charges but was found guilty, banned until March this year and fined £3,725.

Brazil international Paqueta has been charged with spot-fixing offences after he collected yellow cards in four of West Ham's Premier League games.

He denies any wrongdoing and expressed his surprise at being charged in a social media statement.

'I am extremely surprised and upset that the FA has decided to charge me,' he wrote on X.

'For nine months, I ahem co-operated with every step of their investigation and provided all the information I can.

'I deny the charges in their entirety and will fight with every breath to clear me name. Due to the ongoing process, I will not be providing any further comment.'

West Ham said they will 'continue to stand by and support' Paqueta, who has until June 3 to provide a response to the charges.
