Cat who was shot in the face is 'lucky to be alive' after having cutting-edge surgery - as his owner recalls horror of seeing 'blood on the patio'

Rachel Driver from Wakefield was horrified to find a pool of blood on her patio Dexter, 8, suffered sever damage to tongue and his jaw bone was shattered

The owner of a cat who has miraculously survived after being shot in the face has recalled her horror at seeing her blood-soaked patio before her battered feline surfaced a few hours later.

Eight-year-old Dexter suffered severe damage to his nasal cavities, tongue and soft tissues to his head from the shotgun wound - although it is still unclear how or why he was shot.

Luckily, after Dexter's owner Rachel Driver, from Wakefield, saw her pet's injuries, she took him straight to Paragon Veterinary Referrals where the surgeons were able to carry out a tricky procedure which saved the miracle moggy's life.

Cutting-edge procedures and state-of-the-art equipment was used to reconstruct his entire mouth after his jaw bone was left in tatters.

And against all odds, Dexter survived the ordeal - with the vet saying he's 'lucky to be alive'.

Rachel recalled her horror when she spotted a pool of blood on their patio with no Dexter in sight.

'We first realised there was a problem when we found a lot of blood on our patio but no sign of Dexter until much later,' she said.

'When he arrived back home, his eyes were bloodshot, his jaw obviously broken and we took him to the emergency vet.'

After taking a bleeding Dexter to visit the emergency vet, Rachel was told her feline needed to be taken for further testing at Paragon.

'I was then informed he had been shot with a shotgun. We were incredibly shocked,' she shared.

Paragon's small animal surgeon, Danny Kenny, was one of the lead vets treating Dexter alongside other orthopaedic colleagues.

Dan said: 'This is an unusual case in the sense that facial shotgun injuries are very rare.

'Given the imaging findings and the extent of his injuries, Dexter is incredibly lucky to have survived.'

The surgery needed to save Dexter's life was fairly complicated at the best of times, according to the vet.

However it became even more complex due to the nature of his soft tissue injury and the fact Dexter was missing a large fragment of bone from his hard palate.

The family pet has now made a full recovery following the operations and is back with his grateful owners.

'Dexter is a different cat now. He's far more loving to us and doesn't leave the house for very long,' Rachel said.

'However, he's happy and he was most definitely saved by all the wonderful staff at Paragon.

'Dan was the most amazing vet whose care to Dexter will never be forgotten, we will always be grateful.'
