Eagles Cornerback Competition: "May The Best Man Win"

PHILADELPHIA – Good competition is what can take positions from good to great, at least that’s what the Philadelphia Eagles are hoping with the 14 cornerbacks on board to try to win a job this summer.

Good coemption is supposed to be healthy, but sometimes it can create animosity. Darius Slay is here to make sure that doesn’t happen.

“That’s what the job is, to be competitive, but at the end of the day I told the group, we’re all here to complete and we’re all here to help everyone get better, so it’s not like somebody is better or hating on each other," said Slay on May 22. "We’re all here for each other and whoever the best man wins take it for what it is and take it to the next team you go to.

“We’re all here to help each other get better, not just terminate somebody. Told them we’re all family at the end of the day.”

The Eagles will conduct their next round of OTAs after the Memorial Day holiday. Perhaps James Bradberry will attend.

Whether he does or not, one player to look forward to seeing more of is Quinyon Mitchell. He won’t lose his job no matter how intense the competition becomes. He is the team’s first-round draft pick, and frankly, he could end up being the starter opposite Slay when the team goes to Brazil to open its season on Sept. 6.

Mitchell looked as advertised in the first OTA reporters were allowed to watch.

“He's obviously got good movement,” said defensive coordinator Vic Fangio. “He's got good size for a corner. He's going to have to adapt to the NFL game, covering NFL receivers, NFL schemes in the passing game. There's a lot to learn.

“We think he's the right guy emotionally and mentally to do that. Hopefully, he'll pay dividends quickly rather than later. But he's going to be one of the many competing.”

Asked about Mitchell and second-round pick Cooper DeJean and the biggest challenge for a young cornerback to adjust to the NFL, Slay touched on competing as well.

“I told them to slow down and make sure you do your assignment,” he said. “You wouldn’t be in the league if you couldn’t compete, so you can compete already, so make sure you do your job, know your assignment, know how to do it, know where you have to be, all that, and be on top of a lot of stuff.

“I learned that as a rookie, I made sure I knew my assignment because I knew my competitive edge would kick in when it was time to lock in.

"So right now I tell these guys, learn, learn the defense, understand what’s going on here, and put your competitive edge to it because you wouldn’t be here if you couldn’t compete.”
