Brits travelling to Spain warned as temperatures set to hit 40C and weather maps turn dark red

Brits travelling to Spain and Portugal for a break in the sun have been warned that temperatures could rise to 40C as May ends and June begins.

With the arrival of summer, many holidaymakers jet off to coastal areas of Europe but those travelling to the Iberian Peninsula next week should be prepared for sweltering conditions. Weather maps show that temperatures are skyrocketing, with some areas set to be warmer than others.

In Spain, Britain's favourite holiday destination, the mercury will float between 18C next week in the far north of the country and a scorching 38C in southern areas. On Wednesday, the particular hotspots will be Seville, which could see 37C, and Badajoz on the Portuguese border, which could see 36C.

On Friday, Seville will once again likely be the hottest part of the country, while the port city of Huelva, between Seville and Portugal, will also see temperatures close to 40C, reports the Express. The mercury in Malaga will be around the high 20s and low 30s.

And according to WXCharts, Portugal is also expected to experience very warm temperatures next week, with the Algarve experiencing 37C on Wednesday and 38C on Thursday. Lisbon and Porto are also set for temperatures in the mid-30s - similar to Braga, which is located in the northern, usually cooler part of the country.

Meanwhile, in the UK temperatures will not be anywhere near as high and although most days are expected to be dry, there will still be some rain around. Over the Bank Holiday weekend, the Met Office said a "typical springtime mix of weather" is likely, with sunshine, showers and some longer spells of rain possible for some.

Temperatures overall are expected to be around the average for the time of year, but it will feel warm in any longer spells of sunshine, according to the Met Office. Commenting on the forecast for Sunday and Bank Holiday Monday, Met Office Deputy Chief Meteorologist Dan Harris said: "Sunday will have a mixture of sunny spells but also scattered, heavy and in places thundery downpours.

"Not everywhere will see them but where they do occur there is a small chance of some temporary issues such as flooded roads. Scotland will be cloudier with rain, while Northern Ireland will also be cloudy but with a chance that heavy showers could break out later too, bringing similar conditions to England and Wales."

The meteorologist added: "The outlook for Bank Holiday Monday is for brighter, cooler and breezier conditions with scattered showers for England and Wales at first, but a steady drying trend from the west is likely. Northern Ireland could well start off fine but cool, and remain settled whilst feeling pleasantly warm in longer sunny spells.

"The focus for heavier showers is expected to transfer to Scotland and possibly northeast England, where again these could be slow moving, the heaviest of which could cause some temporary, localised issues such as flooded roads. We are keeping the weather warning situation under review, so please keep up to date with the latest warnings and forecasts from the Met Office if you have plans this Bank Holiday weekend."

The Met Office's long-range forecast from May 30 to June 8 says: "Sunny spells and showers across much of the UK at the start of this period, the showers perhaps heavy in places. Moving into the weekend, conditions will become more settled as high pressure builds in from the west.

"A few showers could still develop, particularly in the north, but for many it will become increasingly dry with spells of sunshine. For the week that follows, there are no particularly strong signals for a particular type of weather to dominate. Overall, the south of the UK will probably be drier, with focus for showers or rainfall tending to be across the north."
