With Gambit Dying, Destiny 2 Should Make Onslaught Its New Third Mode
- The Onslaught mode in Destiny 2 has gained popularity, offering unique challenges and a coveted Superblack shader as a reward for completion.
- With Gambit support dwindling, Onslaught could potentially replace it as a core activity if regularly updated with new maps and enemies.
- To ensure ongoing player engagement, Onslaught could benefit from a regular reward rotation to keep players coming back for more challenges. More maps and enemy types would not hurt, either.
Originally introduced in Destiny 2's critically acclaimed Forsaken expansion, the game's PvE/PvP hybrid Gambit mode was initially received with open arms, as it brought an entirely different approach to gameplay than any other Destiny 2 activity had before. While it divided players with its numerous balance issues for some time, Bungie eventually "fixed" Gambit to make it a little more fair for both sides. However, despite still being one of the main activities in Destiny 2, it has not received any new content for years, with Bungie even going so far as to imply that it would no longer be working to improve Gambit in any way. As such, Gambit is now in maintenance mode only, but that also means there may be room for another recently popular activity to take on a more prominent role in Destiny 2's future.
At the moment, Destiny 2's three core playlist activities are Vanguard Strikes, Crucible, and Gambit. However, with Destiny 2's recent Into the Light update came the brand-new Onslaught horde mode, in which players fend off increasingly difficult waves of enemies and bosses. Onslaught has been fairly popular among the Destiny community, despite some feeling that it lasts far too long to be worth it. The main draw of the mode has been the new Superblack shader, an all-black shader that fans have been requesting for years that is awarded to those who increase their rank with Shaxx by completing Onslaught and bounties, as well as quests revolving around Destiny 2's Brave weapons. Arguably, there's little reason for Onslaught's popularity to come and go so quickly, especially with Gambit now fading away from the game. Instead, Onslaught could potentially replace Gambit, so long as Bungie remained committed to keeping it updated.

Destiny 2 Should Add New Maps and Enemies to Onslaught
Adding new maps to any activity in Destiny 2 has never really been at the top of Bungie's list of priorities. In fact, only recently were new maps finally added to the game's Crucible mode after years of requests from fans. That being said, perhaps the recent updates to Crucible are a sign of things to come, and Onslaught could receive the same treatment. Assuming Onslaught could eventually become one of Destiny 2's core activities and essentially replace Gambit, it would need to see new maps added regularly.
Currently, there are three Onslaught maps — Midtown, Vostok, and Mothyards — but Destiny 2 could still add even more in the future to increase the mode's lifespan. Furthermore, the addition of new enemies or enemy combinations alongside these new maps would be welcome. The Taken and Scorn have yet to be one of the enemy factions featured in Onslaught, and the upcoming Final Shape expansion could see the new Dread enemy faction featured in Onslaught as well.
Destiny 2 Should Implement a Regular Reward Rotation for Onslaught
Finally, for Onslaught to continuously be worth playing, it would need a regular reward rotation. At the moment, the biggest reward for completing Onslaught multiple times is the coveted Superblack shader. Unfortunately, beyond that, Onslaught becomes a little less worth playing, unless players are trying to farm for BRAVE weapons. As such, in order to see Onslaught become one of Destiny 2's core activities, it would need different rewards regularly added, each one arguably just as valuable or more valuable than the last.
Time will tell whether Gambit is eventually removed from Destiny 2 altogether, but there is little reason why it shouldn't be at this point, considering Gambit may be receiving its final update soon. If it is removed from the game, Onslaught should certainly take its place, as it seems to have captured the Destiny 2 community in the same way Gambit once did. This time, though, Bungie will need to be a bit more prudent about its approach to Onslaught and ensure it is kept up to date to maintain its appeal.
