Chiefs Four-Time Champ Remains Vital for Mahomes Despite Injury
Kansas City Chiefs left guard Joe Thuney has consistently been mentioned among the most versatile linemen of his era throughout his eight-year career.
Unfortunately, a torn pectoral suffered during the Chiefs’ Divisional round playoff victory over the Buffalo Bills prevented the three-time All Pro from suiting up in Super Bowl LVIII.

In spite of his absence from the field, Thuney earned his second championship ring with the Chiefs — giving him a total of four, thanks to his two which were previously earned with the New England Patriots. In fact, the NC State product leads all active NFL players with four Super Bowl wins.
As he continues to make strides in his recovery, Thuney is eager to prove that he is still one of the top interior linemen in the NFL. While he is most effective when lining up at the left guard position he has previously spent time at right guard, the tackle position and even at center — making him one of Kansas City’s more versatile options along the offensive line. Last season, he logged 1,087 snaps at left guard, while being whistled for only two penalties. For his efforts, he was awarded a first-team All Pro nod.
Though some may consider his nearly $27 million salary cap hit to be excessive, Thuney’s protection of quarterback Patrick Mahomes is more than enough to make his case to remain in red and gold. At his best, the 31-year-old is one of the most aware and anticipatory players at his position.
He reacts to the movement of the opposition’s defensive front as well as anyone in the NFL. Thuney’s presence as a stabilizing force alongside center Creed Humphrey and right guard Trey Smith should make the Chiefs’ decision to keep him in Kansas City for the foreseeable future.
