New CPOY Guidelines Help Jets' Rodgers

The second New York Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers tore his ACL, he became the favorite to win the 2025 AP Comeback Player of the Year Award. The promise he’d be back, his status as a once-elite quarterback, and the expectations of the Jets’ success have the football world intently monitoring his road back.

As the season approaches and reports of Rodgers’ health remain strong, the hype has only grown. Anything less than a deep playoff run will be considered underwhelming.

Subsequently, the hype around his Comeback Player of the Year campaign has continued to grow. On Tuesday, Rodgers received a preseason boost to his candidacy.

The AP guidelines now encourage voters to prioritize players who persevered through injury or illness, rather than adverse circumstances such as irrelevancy, age, or poor performance.

“The spirit of the AP Comeback Player of the Year Award is to honor a player who has demonstrated resilience in the face of adversity by overcoming illness, physical injury or other circumstances that led him to miss playing time the previous season,” the AP put forward, headlined by Rob Maaddi, who oversees such changes.

This effectively thins the herd for Rodgers, whose current odds, per DraftKings, sit at a league-best +125.

His other competitors for the award are presumably Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow (+250), new Atlanta Falcons passer Kirk Cousins (+500) and Indianapolis Colts phenom Anthony Richardson (+600). Veteran passers who were largely healthy last season, like Russell Wilson and Sam Darnold (+2000 each) stand virtually no chance of winning.

Perhaps Jets fans can take solace in these developments after running back Breece Hall lost after receiving just three points worth of votes.

He recovered from a torn ACL to establish himself as a superstar back, but fell well short of the winner, Joe Flacco, as well as Damar Hamlin, Baker Mayfield, Matthew Stafford, Tua Tagovailoa, Brock Purdy, and Calvin Ridley – several of which hadn’t dealt with injuries during the 2022 regular season.

Rodgers doesn’t need to set the league on fire to win this award, but leading New York back to the playoffs for the first time in over a decade would almost certainly cement his candidacy and add perhaps one last award to his trophy case.
