Car plunges from top floor of Durban parkade: Driver dead

Emergency workers responded swiftly to an incident after a car plunged from the top floor of the Atrium Berea’s shopping centre parkade in Overport, Durban, on Thursday.

Deceased trapped in vehicle

Garrith Jamieson, Director of ALS (Advanced Life Support) Paramedics, said that they responded to a call shortly after 12:30 and made their way to the scene, according to Times Live. The driver, a 76-year-old man, was trapped in the vehicle at the time. The vehicle, a navy VW T-Cross, landed on its roof after the car plunged from the third floor of the building. The vehicle plummeted four floors from the multi-storey mall in Overport in Durban.

The driver was alone in the vehicle and did not show any signs of life. He had sustained fatal injuries and medics declared him deceased at the scene. The eThekweni Fire Department, police, and Metro Police Search and Rescue unit worked together to use the Jaws of Life and other hydraulic equipment to remove the man from the vehicle. The Overport Drive roadway was closed at the time.

Mall video footage leads to speculations

The circumstances leading up to the crash are unknown at the present time. The South African Police Service (SAPS) is investigating the matter. Shopping centre managers are cooperating with the authorities.

However, Jamieson stated that it appeared the driver lost control. There is a strong possibility that the driver experienced medical complications as he was about to exit the parkade. Video footage from inside the mall’s parkade shows the vehicle narrowly missing parked cars before crashing into the wall. Based on the video footage, it appears that the vehicle was traveling at a high speed.

Security guard and construction worker share their experience

A security guard said that there was pandemonium following the incident. There were obviously multiple onlookers and bystanders present. He said that management instructed him straightaway to block all the entrances into the mall. This was presumably to ensure the safety of shoppers. Additionally, he said that everyone was clueless about what caused the incident. ‘I just heard a huge thud’, said the security guard.

A construction worker who was working on Vause Road, near Overport Drive, at the time of the incident said there was ‘a deafening sound’.

The Atrium Berea mall serves the larger Berea, Musgrave, Morningside, and Overport areas. It was formerly known as Overport City.
