ITV praised as fans notice endearing change to Mr Bates V The Post Office on streaming platform

Viewers have praised ITV after they spotted a heartwarming update to "Mr Bates V The Post Office" on their streaming platform.

The hard-hitting ITV series became an instant hit with the British public after it aired on ITV1 earlier this year. The TV series followed the story of Alan Bates (played by Toby Jones), a former sub-postmaster who tirelessly fought for justice against wrongful accusations due to the Post Office's defective computer system.

The series documented Bates' battle for justice and the impact the Post Office scandal had on his life and many others affected by wrongful accusations of theft, fraud, and false accounting.

Back in 1999, a fault with the Post Office’s IT system (Horizon, by Fujitsu) incorrectly reported cash shortfalls in branches across the country, which led to hundreds of innocent postmasters and postmistresses being dismissed from their jobs, with some taking their lives due to the stress.

After airing back in January, the show was met with wide praise but more recently, fans have been left delighted that the real-life star of the show, Alan Bates, was among the famous names on the King's Birthday Honours list.

In light of the recent news, the show was given a new name, with ITV aptly naming it: "Sir Bates and The Post Office." After some fans spotted the recent change, they took to X to express their joy. One excited fan wrote: "A nice tweak on the ITVX website." Others quickly agreed, however, some seemingly picking up on an error, claimed the new title should read "Sir Alan" instead.

Sir Alan started the Justice for Subpostmasters Alliance and told Sky News he's accepting the honor "not just for myself... but for the whole group." He then added: "It's not just for me, it's for all of them."

After the four episodes of the drama aired earlier this year, many people turned to social media to rave about the programme, with many deeming it a “must-watch." “Brilliant drama on ITV,” wrote one person on X. “Being falsely accused of wrongdoing and sacked with dubious processes is a very painful and damaging experience affecting the individuals and all their families too.”

However, some viewers were not happy after witnessing the maltreatment of the workers. One viewer wrote: “My blood is already boiling, and it’s 30 minutes in… People need to be in jail for this. The casual destruction of people’s lives is despicable.” A second furious fan added: "Highly watchable, and important programme about what is probably the largest miscarriage of justice in British legal history. Alan Bates is an extraordinary man."
