Australia approves $23 million humanitarian aid for displaced Africans

Australia will send $23 million in humanitarian assistance to civilians caught between ongoing conflict and disasters in the Horn of Africa.

Foreign Minister Penny Wong has today approved the aid package to support critical needs and services for those in Sudan, Ethiopia, Somalia and Kenya.

"Australia is gravely concerned by the deteriorating humanitarian situation in the Horn of Africa and is working with international partners to help the most vulnerable and address instability in the region," she said.

More than seven million Sudanese people are displaced due to ongoing conflict.

"We continue to advocate for political solutions to these conflicts and to call for safe and unimpeded access for humanitarian organisations."

Sudanese people will receive the bulk of the funding with $13 million to assist more than seven million civilians displaced due to conflict between its armed forces and a powerful paramilitary group since April 2023.

High levels of food insecurity and almost five million people on the brink of starvation has left the country hurtling towards becoming the world's worst hunger crisis.

Ethiopia and Somalia will get $6 million to support those affected from the now-ceased war between the Ethiopian government and Tigrayan authorities, violence, drought and flooding.

At least 4.5 million people have been internally displaced in Ethiopia while four million people in Somalia face acute food insecurity.

Kenya will also receive $4 million in response to devastating floods and food insecurity following the effects of droughts.

The assistance will be delivered through Australian and local NGOs, the International Committee of the Red Cross and UN partners.

Assistant Foreign Affairs Minister Tim Watts said the multimillion-dollar aid is part of our broader effort to support security and stability in the region.

"Australia is appalled by ongoing incidents of civilians being attacked, children being recruited to armed groups and gender-based violence increasing," he said.
