Cardiogenic shock means that the heart’s function is significantly impaired causing low blood pressure and decreased blood circulation to the body’s organs. Cardiogenic shock most often occurs from a heart attack or decompensated heart failure. You prevent ever experiencing cardiogenic shock by preventing coronary artery disease and heart failure. This means controlling the risk factors for cardiovascular disease and not drinking alcohol excessively.

With cardiogenic shock, the heart is not pumping to provide sufficient blood flow to the heart muscle itself and to other organs in the body. Typically blood pressure is very low, heart rate is elevated, the kidneys make less urine and there is often decreased cognitive function. Fluid often backs up in the lungs because of poor heart pumping action.
