NIÑA EN PISCINA

Una familia santandereana se encuentra en duelo tras la impactante y trágica muerte de su hija de 10 años, quien contrajo un parásito durante unas vacaciones en Santa Marta en junio de este año.

¿Cómo pasó?

La menor disfrutó de momentos familiares en jacuzzis y piscinas del hotel durante sus vacaciones. Sin embargo, tres días después, presentó síntomas iniciales como vómito, diarrea y dolor de oído, marcando el comienzo de una tragedia inimaginable.

A pesar de recibir tratamiento inicial con antibióticos, la situación de la niña empeoró. Convulsiones, confusión, afasia y alteración de la conciencia se manifestaron en los días siguientes. Después de 12 días, cayó en coma, y dos semanas más tarde, se declaró su muerte cerebral.

¿Cuál fue el diagnóstico de la menor?

Lo que inicialmente se pensó como meningitis bacteriana y luego como meningitis autoinmune, fue finalmente identificado como una meningoencefalitis amebiana primaria (MAP) mediante un estudio histopatológico del Instituto Nacional de Salud (INS).

La MAP es una infección cerebral causada por parásitos en el sistema nervioso central. Estos protozoos de “vida libre” pueden sobrevivir y replicarse en ambientes húmedos o acuáticos, como los presentes en piscinas y jacuzzis, como en los que estuvo la niña.

La presencia del parásito desencadenó una inflamación asociada a agentes citotóxicos, causando un daño tisular extenso y necrosis cerebral en la niña.

Modo de infección en humanos

El neurocirujano e investigador William Omar Contreras López, en diálogo con El Tiempo, explicó que el parásito ingresa por la cavidad nasal, especialmente durante actividades como la inmersión, buceo o nado. Desde la mucosa nasal, se desplaza por el nervio olfativo hasta llegar a los bulbos olfativos y las membranas cerebrales.
