How to avoid ‘turkey neck’

Loose skin on the neck is often referred to as “turkey neck” and can be a source of insecurity for many people.

According to research, 42% of people in the U.K. are unhappy with the appearance of their necks.

Andrew Vassiliou, Director of hair and beauty supplier Chris & Sons, has revealed how to prevent a “turkey neck”.

Hydrate regularly

Staying hydrated is key when it comes to keeping your skin looking and feeling healthy.

“Proper hydration is vital for healthy skin. Drinking enough water daily will keep your skin hydrated from the inside,” Andrew explains. “Additionally, use a moisturiser with ingredients like hyaluronic acid on your neck to help retain moisture and prevent dryness. Hyaluronic acid is excellent for locking in moisture, making your skin appear plumper and more youthful.”

Sun protection

“Turkey neck” is often a result of ageing, so it is vital that you look after your skin properly to prevent that from happening prematurely.

“Sun protection is essential in preventing premature ageing. Apply sunscreen with at least SPF 30 daily to your neck and any exposed areas,” Andrew says. “UV rays from the sun can cause collagen breakdown and lead to sagging skin and wrinkles, so protecting your neck from the sun is essential. You should use SPF every day, regardless of the weather.”

Exfoliate gently

Using a gentle exfoliator can help deter signs of ageing.

“Exfoliation is necessary for removing dead skin cells and encouraging the production of new, healthy skin,” Andrew states. “Use a gentle exfoliant designed for your face and neck to avoid over-exfoliation as this can damage your skin and exacerbate the signs of ageing.”

Retinol products

Using products that contain retinol can help reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

“Consider incorporating a retinol-based product into your skincare routine,” Andrew suggests. “Retinol is a derivative of vitamin A and can stimulate collagen production. It’s effective for reducing fine lines and wrinkles.”

The expert adds, “Start with a lower concentration and gradually increase as your skin gets accustomed to it.”

Avoid “tech neck”

“Tech neck” can develop if you spend long periods of time looking down at a screen.

“Spend less time looking down at screens to avoid the development of ‘tech neck’ wrinkles,” Andrew recommends. “Take breaks to stretch and move your neck and shoulders to reduce strain.”

Diet and exercise

“Turkey neck” can often be kept at bay with regular exercise and a healthy diet.

“A well-balanced diet rich in vitamins and minerals can support overall skin health, including the neck area,” Andrew says. “Incorporate foods with antioxidants, like fruits and vegetables, and healthy fats, such as those found in avocados and fish. Regular exercise can improve blood circulation and overall well-being, benefiting your skin.”
