The Sweet Charity star is a Hollywood icon.

She will turn 90 in April and her career has spanned seven decades.

As a young girl, Shirley – who was born Shirley MacLean Beaty – wanted to be a ballerina. She started dancing at the age of three in 1937 after doctors told her it would strengthen her weak ankles.

The Richmond, Virginia native moved to New York City to try her hand at acting the summer before her senior year in high school and made her acting debut on Broadway as a teenager.

She landed roles in the chorus of Oklahoma! and The Pajama Game. In 1955 she made her film debut in Alfred Hitchcock’s The Trouble with Harry and won the Golden Globe for New Star of the Year.

Shirley rose to prominence with her starring roles in 1956’s Around the World in 80 Days, 1958’s Some Came Running, 1959’s Ask Any Girl, 1960’s The Apartment, 1961’s The Children’s Hour, 1963’s Irma la Douce and 1969’s Sweet Charity.

Her ballet dancing dreams came true when she was cast in one of the lead roles in The Turning Point in 1977. The film was about the world of ballet in New York City and featured choreography by George Balanchine and the famed Alvin Ailey.

She won her first Academy Award in 1984 for her role in the tearjerker Terms of Endearment.

One of MacLaine’s most memorable performances was in 1989’s Steel Magnolias alongside Daryl Hannah, Olympia Dukakis, Julia Roberts, Dolly Parton and Sally Field.

She has also won six Golden Globes and an Emmy for Gypsy in My Soul.

And she’s not the only star  – or Oscar winner – in her family.

Her brother is Academy Award winner Warren Beatty, 86, and her sister-in-law is four time Oscar nominee Annette Bening, 65.

She does not have an Instagram account, but she was on the social media platform last week.
