Frank Skinner has shared his view on wokeness, and why the movement is welcome.
Wokeness means to be aware of and concerned about social injustice and discrimination. Although the term is complimentary as it can mean being clued up on what’s going on in the world and how certain groups are treated unfairly, it’s often been weaponised as an insult to insinuate things have gone ‘too far’.
Just this week, on This Morning Ashley James schooled Gyles Brandreth on the term.
Frank, 67, is more than happy to be woke as he doesn’t want anybody to be offended. The conversation arose when Frank, who is a devout Catholic, described his career as an ‘endless stream of filth’. While on The Jonathan Ross Show, he was asked how the Church perceives the jokes.
The comedic legend replied: ‘I don’t think there’s anything wrong with dirty jokes, it’s about targets and stuff like that.
‘I’m personally very happy about the woke movement because I don’t have any desire to go up and be cruel or unkind to anybody.’

In the episode airing on Saturday, Frank also revealed how being with his partner Cath Mason for 23 years has helped his career.
‘It’s good for a comedian to be in a long-term relationship because it means awkward silences don’t frighten me,’ he shared.
Proving the relationship is a great source for jokes, he added: ‘When we do argue, I’ve always said when you watch us argue, it would be like going to a gig to see a band – we start with some new stuff and then eventually we roll out our greatest hits.’

The couple shares a son, Buzz Cody, 11, who is passionate about heavy metal music. Frank revealed the pair have attended KISS, Slipknot, and Metallica gigs in the past year.
While the music genre is often associated with headbanging and loudness, it has been ‘meditative’ for Frank.
‘Slash did a solo which lasted about 15 minutes and during the solo all my problems, all the problems of my life – the things people said to me at school, getting sacked by my radio show – just washed, it was like a fabulous, cleansing, meditative experience. It was so brilliant,’ he mused.

Frank may be spending his time in mosh pits, but BBC wants to see him on the ballroom floor instead. Strictly Come Dancing has asked Frank to participate in the show ‘a few times’.
‘My partner persuaded me to go on a lads’ weekend to Amsterdam instead – she thought there would be less temptation,’ he joked.
It’s been a no so far, as Frank is ‘so self-conscious’. He’s even had to turn down Michael McIntyre’s The Wheel, as they move their upper body to the music while sat down.
Strictly professional dancer and fellow chat show guest, Johannes Radebe did manage to get Frank up on his feet during the show, so there may be hope yet!
The Jonathan Ross Show airs on Saturday on ITV at 10:05pm.
