Former Great British Bake Off star Ruby Bhogal has confirmed her engagement to long-term partner James Stewart – but admits the moment was ruined because she had food poisoning.
Bhogal, 34, accepted the proposal after BBC presenter Stewart got down on bended knee during a recent trip to New York.
Taking to Instagram on Monday morning, Bhogal revealed he asked for her hand in marriage more than three weeks ago, but opted to tell each of her family members before making the engagement public.
She wrote: ‘Have deceptively been hiding my hand in the recent the vids because it’s taken me about 3 weeks to tell most of my family whilst it took James a whole 3 minutes.’
But Bhogal, a Bake Off finalist in 2018, was forced to cut the proposal short because she was stricken with a sudden bout of sickness.

She added: ‘I wish we had a romantic story to go alongside it but food poisoning managed to kick in right about 5 mins before he was about propose and I was about to have a bridesmaid moment running across the street… so yay for love and yay for uncooked chicken in NYC.
‘I love this life (time to start planning a big FAT Indian wedding but all I’m thinking about is the CAKE am I right?!)’
Prior to his proposal Stewart had pranked Bhogal by surreptitiously hiding the ring in plain sight while she obliviously went about her day.
In a series of Instagram posts, she is seen brushing her teeth, sleeping on a plane and walking through Central Park while the presenter repeatedly flashes the ring without her noticing.
Bhogal, a former project manager from London, set more than a few Bake Off fan hearts aflutter after making her debut on the Channel 4 show.
Her glowing skin, dark hair in a effortless messy ponytail and pretty features left some viewers head over heels within minutes of watching her on screen.
Men and women tweeted their admiration for Bhogal’s physical attributes, with many members of the gay community also voicing their support for the dark-haired beauty.
Bhogal also received more camera time than any other contestant on the premiere episode of season nine.
