A woman has been shot dead by police after fatally injuring another woman.

Police were called to Kett Street in Lower Plenty in Melbourne’s north-east around 6.30pm on Friday night following reports of an altercation between two women.

‘Upon police arrival, members were challenged by a woman armed with a knife, who was subsequently shot,’ police said in a statement.

‘That woman, who has yet to be formally identified, died at the scene.’

The woman was believed to be aged in her 20s.

The second woman aged in her 50s who was attacked was treated by first responders but also died at the scene, despite frantic efforts to save her life.

Police are not looking for anyone else in relation to the incident.

It’s believed the parties were known to each other.

Residents in the quiet street not often visited by police were shocked to hear the sound of gunshots.

I heard a couple of bangs, it sounded like floorboards, like whipcracking,’ Mick told the Herald Sun.

‘It is quiet as, once in a hundred years.

‘A pity the poor ladies are no longer with us.’

Another resident Jack went to buy pizza for dinner and returned to fnd the street blocked off.

‘We had no idea what was going on until we saw the news report,’ he said

Homicide detectives will investigate the incident which will be oversighted by Professional Standards Command, which is protocol for any incident where a police firearm is discharged.
