WAM participates in ‘Role of Media in Inciting Hatred and Violence’ forum

JEDDAH, 27th November, 2023 (WAM) — The Emirates News Agency (WAM) participated in the International Media Forum, themed “The Role of Media in Inciting Hatred and Violence”, which was held in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, yesterday.

Speaking at a panel discussion titled “Religious Institutions and Media Alliances for Confronting Hate Speech and Violence”, Ali Al Saad, Acting Deputy Director-General of WAM, stressed the importance of utilising news and media content to promote tolerance, peace, and respect for others.

He highlighted the need to build effective partnerships between religious and media institutions around the world, such as the Document on Human Fraternity, which was launched from the UAE on 4th February, 2019, with the aim of promoting global peace and coexistence, and the establishment of the Hedayah International Centre of Excellence for Countering Violent Extremism (2013), co-launched by the UAE and the UK as the first independent applied research institution supporting dialogue, research, and training to counter extremism.

Al Saad underscored WAM’s signing of the News Agencies Tolerance Charter, along with 25 news agencies from around the world, to boost the role of the media in promoting the values of tolerance and coexistence around the world, as well as the launch of the Tolerance Charter for News Agencies and Media Outlets, a document aimed to unite media entities from across the globe around promoting tolerance, coexistence and intercultural dialogue from different countries of the world, during the first edition of the Global Media Congress (2022).
