Mumbai Indians (MI) pulled off the biggest trade deal in the history of the Indian Premier League (IPL) after securing the services of star all-rounder Hardik Pandya from Gujarat Titans (GT). In a separate deal, Cameron Green left MI just a year after being purchased for Rs. 17.5 crore and joined Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB).

While a trade deal of this magnitude has never happened in IPL history before, MI have been no strangers to doing trade deals. In the past, they have pulled off two of the most successful trade deals since the league’s inception, having signed Quinton de Kock from RCB in 2019 and Trent Boult from the Delhi Capitals (DC) in 2020.

MI have never shied away from attempting ambitious trade deals and once also made a ‘ridiculous’ trade deal to sign Rashid Khan from Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH). Former SRH coach Tom Moddy revealed in 2020 that MI made an offer to sign the star Afghanistan spinner. Moddy had stated that the incident happened two years before he made the remark.

“I remember Mumbai Indians, it may have been 2-years ago, requesting a trade for Rashid Khan. I mean come on! No other franchise had the gumption or bravado to be able to knock on the door and say look we’d like to get a trade for Rashid Khan – that’s like okay, I’m sure you do so, does the rest of the world,” Moddy told EspnCricinfo.

“What I’ve found through my experience over the last few years in the IPL is that Mumbai Indians is probably one of the most active teams in regards to seeking trade opportunities. They are not afraid to knock on your doors and ask for ridiculous deals. And they keep knocking on the door, and if they keep doing that to seven other franchises, they are eventually going to get what they want,” Moddy added.

MI had tried to sign Rashid in the 2017 auction and had a bidding war, which SRH won for an amount of Rs. 4 crore. Rashid was released by SRH ahead of the 2022 IPL mega auction and was signed by GT for Rs. 15 crore in a pre-auction draft.
