indian football: ‘main aapki posting kha jaunga’ – female referee threatened in delhi senior division

Indian football has been marred yet again by an ugly incident in the second tier of the ‘Delhi football ecosystem’ where a female referee, officiating a match in the Senior Division League, was subjected to threats and intimidation by a male club official.

Details regarding the specific threats made towards the referee remain unclear, but the incident raises serious concerns about safety in Indian football. Sources close to the Delhi Soccer Association suggest that the incident stemmed from a disagreement over a call made during the match. But the official’s inappropriate behaviour towards a female referee sets a terrible precedent and undermines the spirit of fair play.

In a video that has gone viral, City Football Club official Mohammed Sajid can be heard shouting at the referee: “You have no right. I want to know why she showed me a card. She has been targeting us for a long time.”

Thereafter, Sajid is seen being pulled back by others on the Ambedkar Stadium ground, but he once again storms at the official and threatens her, saying, “Aapki posting kha jaunga, aap kisi nashey mein hongi. last year bhi tumne ye harkat kari thi. ( I can take away your job. Maybe you have taken drugs. You did the same thing last year.”

Anuj Gupta, President of the Delhi Soccer Association, spoke to Sports Now and said, “This episode occurred in the second tier of the Delhi football ecosystem, also called the senior division. We will definitely look into it, and such behaviour is uncalled for. It was a heated match, which is why it happened. But we are definitely working towards women’s development in every aspect.

“We will take this incident forward in our next executive committee meeting and proceed accordingly. But it did happen in the heat of the moment,” Gupta added.

It remains to be seen whether the Delhi Soccer Association and the All India Football Federation (AIFF) will take immediate and strict action against the offending official.

However, this incident highlights the need for stricter regulations and harsher penalties to deter such unacceptable behaviour towards referees, especially those who are women.
