Google holds research event in Bengaluru, inviting AI practitioners, scientists

Google on Thursday hosted its first-ever Research@ event in Bengaluru, bringing together leading AI practitioners and researchers to discuss local solutions and act as a platform for collaborative interaction.

“India has tremendous technical talent; there’s a long tradition of computer science students in India doing amazing things. Anyone with an interest in computer science is turning their attention to machine learning and what it can do. India is well-positioned in this area because there are many students who are already in this field and people already in this industry. It’s an important thing across the world,” said Jeff Dean, chief scientist at Google DeepMind and Google Research, in a press statement.

Dean added that he helped encourage Google’s 1,000 language effort, which is aimed at making AI models available in all major languages. This is crucial, according to him, because many languages spoken by millions of people around the world lackj extensive written materials. These languages could be made available using AI technologies to identify its potential.

He also spoke about the rapid evolution of AI, adding that it is really important to be aware of the “rough edges and potential pitfalls” that come from the scaling of machine learning models. While there is a lot of progress on the factual accuracy of the models compared toa year or two agi, it is still important to actively mitigate the technology’s shortcomings.

“This has been a great event, which has brought together the top AI/ML researchers of India in one place, and it’s a big boon to have Google drive this. The talks have proved to be a useful update of what our colleagues are doing around the country. The experience has been eye-opening, and I hope this event serves as a seed for greater collaboration between both academic researchers and industry,” said Balaraman Ravindran, Professor of Computer Science, IIT Madras, during the event, according to Google.
