Cyber fraudster who created fake Congress profile for donations arrested after party representatives file FIR
The Hyderabad cyber crime police have arrested Surendra Choudary (22), a resident of Rajasthan’s Jaipur, for allegedly creating a fake website of the Indian National Congress (INC) called DonateINC.co.in, seeking donations for the party.
Choudary had created a profile similar to the Congress party’s original website – DonateINC.net, cheating the public into donating to the accounts mentioned on the fake site, the police said in a press release. Choudary was arrested on Tuesday.
The arrest came after representatives from the Congress party filed an FIR with the Hyderabad police, stating that some cyber fraudsters had created a fake donation profile of their political party. The complaint also mentioned that a fabricated logo of INC was also being “deliberately circulated to malign the Congress party”.
“We’ve taken serious note of a recent phishing scam via a fake website impersonating our official donation portal,” Ajay Maken, INC Treasurer, wrote in a post on X.
“This serves as a stern warning: We’re on high alert, and any malicious attempts against our digital assets will be met with stringent legal action,” Maken said, while urging people to contribute to the party responsibly.
