Foxconn CEO Young Liu Conferred With Padma Bhushan

The Group CEO and Chairman of Taiwanese electronics manufacturing giant Foxconn Young Liu, has been conferred to be awarded the Padma Bhushan Award, which is the third highest civilian award, on the eve of India’s 75th Republic Day. He has been honoured with the Padma Bhushan to recognise his contributions as a global business leader.

According to the official announcement made on Thursday, Liu is the only foreigner among the list of 17 Padma Bhushan recipients. In 2019, under his leadership as CEO and chairman, Foxconn commenced the production of iPhones in India, following his takeover from Terry Gou in June of the same year.

Apple commenced the manufacturing of iPhones at the Wistron plant in Bengaluru, which the Tata Group has since acquired.

With a current workforce exceeding 40,000 employees, Foxconn aims to double its workforce this year. The group boasts a turnover surpassing $ 10 billion in India and has made cumulative investments exceeding $ 8 billion in the country.

Guided by Liu’s leadership, Foxconn has become a part of the India Semiconductor Mission, which aims to establish a semiconductor ecosystem within the country. In addition, Foxconn is currently in the process of establishing a joint venture with HCL Group for outsourced semiconductor assembly and testing. In the joint venture, Foxconn is set to make an initial investment of $ 37.2 million.

Throughout his career, Liu founded three companies. In 1988, he established the motherboard company Young Micro Systems, followed by ITE Tech, a northbridge and southbridge semiconductor design company focused on the PC chipset, in 1995. Subsequently, in 1997, he founded another company, ITeX, an ADSL IC design firm.

66 years old, Liu holds an MS degree in Computer Engineering from the University of Southern California and a BS degree in Electrophysics from National Chiao Tung University in Taiwan.
