Bill Belichick, Patriots offense keep hitting new lows

New England Patriots HC Bill Belichick

The New England Patriots dropped to 2-9 with an ugly 10-7 loss to Tommy DeVito and the New York Giants on Sunday.

It was another dreadful performance and a terrible look for head coach Bill Belichick and the team’s offense.

It is even wasting what has been a strong defensive effort in recent weeks.

In their past four losses, the Patriots have allowed just 71 total points, with 31 of those coming in one game to the Miami Dolphins. Over the past three weeks they have allowed 20, 10 and 10 respectively.

They have lost every single one of those games.

Sunday’s game was especially ugly because both quarterbacks – Mac Jones and Bailey Zappe – played horrendous football, combining for just 136 yards, only 4.1 yards per pass attempt and three interceptions. Making it even worse, there seemed to be no communication with the team on which quarterback would actually get the start.

After Sunday’s loss Belichick said he could not recall when he actually told the two quarterbacks who would be starting. Tight end Hunter Henry explained to reporters after Sunday’s game that the team was not told until gameday morning, after both quarterbacks took first-team reps throughout the week.

Sunday was already the fourth time this season the Patriots have been held to seven points or fewer.

In 283 starts with Tom Brady that happened just five times.

On one hand, yes, Brady is significantly better than Jones or Zappe, so it it should be obvious that the offense would decline significantly after he left.

But being held to seven points or less in 36 percent of your games (four out of 11) is simply an unacceptable level of football. Especially when two of those games were lost despite the defense allowing just 10 points.

This is on track to be one of the worst seasons the Patriots have seen in decades.
