John Kavanagh has revealed that it would be a dream for him to have his fighter Conor McGregor compete at Croke Park on the same night as Katie Taylor.
Taylor avenged the only defeat of her career with an epic win over Chantelle Cameron at the 3Arena on Saturday evening and talk has turned to a potential trilogy, with GAA HQ cited as a possible venue.
Both Taylor and her promoter Eddie Hearn called for Croke Park bosses to make a fight at the famous stadium happen, and Kavanagh has thrown his support behind the idea.
“What a night brought to you by @forgedirishstout . Special thank you to the
CEO himself @thenotoriousmma organising amazing ringside tickets for me and the beautiful @orlagh.kavanagh” wrote Kavanagh on Facebook.
“@_thomascarty proved their is no party without the Carty by being the first Domino starting a perfect 4-0 for the Irish. A great win for him and @celtic_warrior_gym_.
“Sitting in the crowd experiencing the electric atmosphere it’d make you day dream about a McGregor – Taylor joint card in Croker…. imagine the scenes!”
Coach John Kavanagh looks on during a fight between Kurt Holobaugh and Lee Hammond during the filming of The Ultimate Fighter.
McGregor himself has called for Taylor’s third bout with Cameron to take place at Croke Park and has hinted that he would be interested in fighting on the same night.
But there are many hurdles to a fight night at Croker, none more so than the cost of staging the event which was reportedly quoted at €500,000.
Hearn was put off bringing Taylor to GAA HQ because of these high costs and implored those in charge to bring costs down in order to make Taylor v Cameron III at Croke Park a reality.
Eddie Hearn and Katie Taylor
“I feel like everyone has to put the pressure on, from the country to politicians to the sport,” said Hearn.
We could make a financial case on tourism and why an event like this would be a huge success for this country.
“But if they can’t understand the compassionate side of giving this event and night to their greatest ever athlete then I really don’t know what we are doing.
“We’re not even asking for favours. All we are asking for is for the cost to be in line with the biggest stadia in the world where we hold boxing.”
