In what can be considered a notable roster maneuver within the MLB, Mitchell Tyranski’s tenure with the Los Angeles Dodgers has ceased, as evidenced by his name surfacing on the Chicago Cubs’ transactions list. The National League West organization has parted ways with the pitching prospect.
The dissolution of the relationship followed Tyranski’s Spring Training experience, where he had been actively competing before being cut at the conclusion of camp.
His Cactus League performance—a singular inning where he grappled with control, issuing two walks and hitting a batter, yet admirably not surrendering a run—ultimately wasn’t enough to secure his spot.
Tyranski’s Collegiate and Minor League Journey
Drafted by the Dodgers in the 12th round in 2019, Tyranski, a Michigan State product hailing from Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, distinguished himself with a consistent display of pitching prowess.
His collegiate accolades are highlighted by leading MSU and securing the sixth spot in Big Ten’s regular-season with an impressive tally of 89 strikeouts over 78 innings. His adaptability shown through a hybrid role of reliever and occasional starter.
However, subsequent opportunities to showcase his aptitude at the rookie level were scarce, with the ensuing years bringing unanticipated trials. The cancellation of the 2020 season due to the COVID-19 pandemic, followed by a requirement for Tommy John surgery, relegated Tyranski to rehabilitation until after the 2022 season.
Upon his return in 2023, Tyranski appeared in 36 games, including one start at the High-A level. He registered a 3.83 ERA and accumulated 47 strikeouts across 42.1 innings, suggesting glimmers of his pre-injury potential.
Now, with the Dodgers chapter closed, Tyranksi looks to revive his career trajectory with the Cubs. Joining the Cubs’ ranks at Low-A Myrtle Beach, he embodies a career poised for resurgence, capitalizing on the low-risk investment the Cubs have made.
The transition could mark a pivotal turning point, as Tyranski endeavors to rediscover the form that initially made him a coveted prospect for Los Angeles.
