Guru Nanak Jayanti also known as Gurpurab is an auspicious day that marks the birth anniversary of the first Sikh guru, Guru Nanak. Considered one of the most religious festivals, this year it will be observed on November 27, 2023. This auspicious day commemorates the life and teachings of Guru Nanak Dev Ji, the founder of Sikhism and the first of the ten Sikh Gurus. His teachings, encapsulated in the Guru Granth Sahib, continue to inspire and guide people towards a life of compassion, equality, and spiritual enlightenment.
On this occasion, Monika Khanna a.k.a Teji from Ikk Kudi Punjab Di opened up about the memories she has of this day and plans for Guru Purab this year.
Monika Khanna who essays the role of Teji in Zee TV’s Ikk Kudi Punjab Di said, “’Nanak Naam Chardi Kala Tere Bhane Sarbat da bhala, it means- सबका भला होगा उसी में हमारा भी भला है। आपकी बानी की शक्ति से, दुनिया में हर किसी को इस तरह जीने का आशीर्वाद मिले’ This is a quote that I have been following since childhood. This one quote is something my parents have always asked me to follow in my life, and things will automatically fall in place. This is that one motto that I always follow in my life to start my day with. I feel in today’s time festivals don’t feel like festivals as they just come and go with the busy hectic schedule that we have. But I remember back in the days, during this festival, we all used to wake up early and get ready for Babaji ki Paalki and attend the Kirtan. After that, we used to go to Gurudwara to seek blessings, perform seva, and enjoy the delicious Langar there. This festival is as big as Diwali for us, so we decorate our houses with lights and candles. Kada Prasad is one thing that I love the most, every year my mom makes it for all of us. My mom used to wake us up during the Amrit Vela (early morning) to get ready and prepare for the Paalki, that time we used to get very annoyed but now we understand the importance of each and every ritual, and feel blessed to have followed the same for all these years.
