Iceland issues new warning as ‘imminent’ volcano threat looms

The Met Office has issued a new magna warning, as Iceland continues to brace itself from an ‘imminent’ volcano eruption.

Authorities in Iceland have stated the threat of ‘magma intrusion’ despite the likelihood of a volcanic eruption decreasing.

The met office said, “The likelihood of a volcanic eruption at some location along the length of the magma intrusion persists.”

“Magma could emerge,” the Met office added.

Three weeks back, Iceland declared a state of emergency after it recorded 800 earthquakes in 14 hours. The earthquakes caused large cracks to emerge on the roads of the fishing town of Grindavik.

Two strong earthquakes including a magnitude of 5.2 tremor were felt, affecting areas such as Rekjavik. Close to 24,000 tremors have been recorded in Iceland since October with 800 quakes registered on November 11.

After the back to back tremors, 4000 residents of Grindavik were forced to leave after the volcanic threat.

The danger zone mapped by the Met office in Iceland projected Grindavik to be at the centre of the eruption. The eruption reportedly will wipe out the entire fishing town.

In the past few weeks, seismic activity has reduced and at times even diminished reportedly. However, the island nation remains on alert for an eruption. Officials expect it to take place with ’30 to zero’ minutes notice.
