Syracuse, N.Y. — Enders Road Elementary School and Eagle Hill Middle School topped the rankings of Central New York schools on the latest round of state English language arts and math assessment tests.
Both schools are in the Fayetteville-Manlius Central School District.
At Enders Road, 83% of students tested proficient in ELA. It was the only school in the region with a proficiency level of over 80% on that test. At Eagle Hill, 93% of students were proficient in math.
Enders Road was No. 2 in the region in math with 90% of its students proficient. Enders Road and Eagle Hill were the only schools in the region with proficiency levels in math of 90% or higher.
The data reflects tests given in grades three through eight combined during the 2022-2023 school year. The state released the latest test results in December.
That suburban schools rank so highly on the list is not a surprise. They tend to enjoy advantages that urban schools don’t, including more money and newer buildings and equipment.
Many students in urban districts like Syracuse live in poverty or have difficult home lives. Those factors bring additional challenges to learning during the school day and ultimately show up in measures of achievement like test scores and graduation rates.
One city of Syracuse school cracked the top 20 in the rankings for one test.
The Syracuse Latin School, located in the city’s Outer Comstock neighborhood, tied for No. 17 in ELA with 59% of its students testing proficient. The school ranked No. 67 in math with 48% proficiency.
Overall, the Syracuse City School District had some of the worst-performing schools in the region. Seymour Dual Language Academy, located southwest of downtown Syracuse, and Delaware Primary on the city’s West Side were the lowest-ranking schools in Central New York.
Just 2% of Seymour’s students were proficient in math, the lowest math proficiency level in the region. Seymour and Delaware tied for the bottom rank in ELA with 3% proficiency each.
