Bharat Bandh: Amid ongoing farmer protests for laws on minimum support prices (MSPs) and agricultural reforms, the Samyukat Kisna and the Kisan Mazdoor Morcha have jointly called for a Bharat Bandh on February 16.
According to a report by ET, the nationwide strike could affect many services. Let’s see how you might be impacted by the Gramin Bharat Bandh scheduled for February 16, 2024.
Bank operations on February 16Currently, banks are scheduled to remain open tomorrow and operate as usual. The Reserve Bank of India’s holiday matrix also confirms that banks will maintain regular hours.
Bank holidays in FebruaryIn February, banks in India will be closed for a total of 10 days. These holidays include the second and fourth Saturdays, as well as Sundays. However, it’s worth noting that some holidays are specific to certain states or regions, meaning that only a few states or areas observe bank holidays on those dates.
Schedule and details of Bharat BandhAccording to news reports, the Bharat Bandh is scheduled to take place from 6:00 AM to 4:00 PM. Farmers intend to organize roadblocks on major routes across the country, leading to the closure of Punjab’s roadways for four hours. This action will disrupt essential services, including the procurement and supply of vegetables and cereals, the ET report said.
The Kisan Mazdoor Morcha and Samyukat Kisna have announced a Bharat Bandh on February 16, 2024, to highlight unfulfilled promises to workers and farmers and advocate for various reforms.
As per the report, protesters will express their demands and highlight the challenges faced by workers and farmers through street plays, music, and poetry. Additionally, participating government employees and trade unions have announced their intention to abolish the existing pension plan and establish an eighth pay scale commission.
Impact of Gramin Bharat BandhIt is likely that many private and government offices, along with village shops, will remain closed on Friday. Moreover, transportation services, agricultural activities, rural employment programs under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MNREGA), and rural industrial and service sector establishments are anticipated to be impacted by these closures.
Services unaffected by the Bharat BandhHowever, essential services such as ambulance operations, medical shops, and schools will continue to operate during the Bharat Bandh on Friday, ensuring that critical services remain accessible to the public.
