Johor to revoke road contractors' licences over shoddy work

ISKANDAR PUTERI: Road contractors in Johor who turn in sub-par jobs will risk having their business licences revoked, says a state executive councillor.

Works, transportation and infrastructure committee chairman Mohamad Fazli Mohamad Salleh (pic) said at present, the monitoring of roads was done by the Public Works Department and local councils through patrols and random checks.

“Patrols and checks are usually carried out twice a week, but because of the lack of manpower and (length of roads) that need to be monitored, some areas might be overlooked – so we value public feedback.

“As an added measure, the state government will also be monitoring the contractors’ performance through the Johor Centre for Construction Development (JCCD),” he told the state assembly sitting at Kota Iskandar here on Tuesday (Nov 28).

He added that once JCCD receives a complaint, an investigation would be carried out to see if the contractor went against the conditions set.

“This could range from not working overtime (for a roadworks project) as stipulated, failing to provide a good traffic management plan, carrying out works without following standard operating procedures, and for unsatisfactory quality of work.

“JCCD can then downgrade the contractor’s rating or revoke its business licence, which will mean that the company can no longer accept jobs commissioned by the state government,” he said.

N. Saraswati (BN-Kemelah) had asked if roadworks in the state were being monitored as some roads were not tarred evenly right up to the shoulders, posing a danger to light vehicles.
