The Detroit Lions have quickly become among the most popular teams in the NFL as a result of their quick rise to the top tier of the NFC.

After falling short against the San Francisco 49ers, the Lions are one of the favorites to represent the NFC in the Super Bowl in 2024. Fox Sports host Colin Cowherd recently tabbed the Lions as a team on par with the 49ers from a roster construction standpoint.

“I think Detroit, and I said this last year, I think they’re the younger version of the San Francisco 49ers,” Cowherd said. “Stars everywhere, they’re just not paid yet and not quite as old. But I think, toe-to-toe, easily in the NFC, easily, are San Francisco and Detroit. I like Green Bay’s (roster), it’s not as good as the Lions. A lot of that is the front office, a lot of that is trades, hitting on Draft picks.”

Cowherd mentioned the Lions on a recent episode of his show, ‘The Herd’ as part of a segment regarding Jared Goff’s recent appearance on the WillBo podcast.

In that podcast, Goff explained his concern about the Detroit media being too negative. Cowherd made a connection to Goff’s comments and explained why he believes media can be too harsh in certain situations.

“But, I mean, it’s funny about Detroit, my wife’s from Michigan. You listen to Eminem, I don’t think optimism and hope,” Cowherd explained. “There is a negativity that exists out there and I saw it when I lived out east. I feel it’s much more laid back and positive, optimistic out west. Some of that is because California teams have done well for the last decade, but I think Jared Goff is onto something. You get that bad weather, that intensity, you’re indoors winter and spring. You stick with your bad teams, you complain about them and Goff’s trying to say, ‘Guys, this is a really good team, we’re not gonna lose anymore.'”
