Assistant Treasurer Stephen Jones says the Albanese government is “doing some practical things” to deal with inflation and the cost-of-living crisis where it can.
According to the poll, 50 per cent of Australians say they feel “worse off” than two years ago.
Data shows middle Australia is struggling to cope with rate hikes and the rising cost of living, with only 16 per cent of those polled saying they are “better off” under the Albanese government.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese will seek to reassure Labor colleagues at their caucus meeting on Tuesday that he is confident the party can re-engage with voters on key issues.
“The key thing we can do to deal with inflation, cost of living … is manage fiscal policy, bring the budget back to surplus … ensure that we have ongoing fiscal restraint … [and] ensure we can get wages moving again – we’re doing that,” Mr Jones told Sky News Australia.

“We’re doing some practical things where we can … but the pathway is narrow for government to ensure that we manage what we do in terms of price and cost of living relief without making the situation worse.”
