Punjab police former intelligence chief Jatinder Aulakh to head PPSC

CHANDIGARH: Punjab police’s former intelligence chief and 1997-batch IPS officer Jatinder Singh Aulakh, who was selected by the Punjab Public Service Commission(PPSC) as DSP in April 1990, is now going to head the same commission as its chairman after clearance from Punjab governor Banwarilal Purohit on Wednesday.

The Punjab council of ministers on Wednesday recommended Aulakh’s name for the post of PPSC chairman and the file was cleared by the governor by evening. Aulakh, who superannuated as ADGP intelligence on January 31 last year after putting in 33 years of service, has been bestowed with the President’s Police Medal for Distinguished Service in 2022, Police Medal for Meritorious Services in 2011, Chief Minister’s Medal for Outstanding Devotion to Duty in 2012 and three Director General’s Commendation Disc in 2018, 2017 and 2010.

As PPSC chairman’s post was lying vacant since September last year after the retirement of its officiating chairperson Jamit Kaur Teji, the recruitment for the class-1 jobs in the state had been stalled. However, PPSC’s regular chairman Jagbans Singh Powar had superannuated in March last year after which, then PPSC member Teji had taken over as officiating chairperson.

A native of village Bargari in Faridkot district, Aulakh belongs to an agricultural background and his later father Jagwinder Singh Aulakh served as sarpanch of village Bargari for a continuous span of 35 years. Aulakh did his schooling from Punjab Public School Nabha, and prior to joining the services, pursued BA (Honors) from DAV College, Chandigarh. Thereafter, he pursued LL.B as well Masters in History from Panjab University.

Aulakh also served in chief minister’s office during the stint of late Harcharan Singh Brar after an overhaul in the CM’s security due to the assassination of former CM Beant Singh. In the rank of SSP he earlier served in Mohali, Sangrur, Ropar, Jagraon, Nawanshahr and Khanna. Later as DIG he also served as Commissioner of Police at Amritsar and Ludhiana. He also served as IGP Patiala Range and Ferozepur Range besides IGP state police headquarters. As SSP Sangrur, Aulakh was instrumental in solving the infamous ‘Jassi Murder Case’ in 2000. As Commissioner of Police, Ludhiana, Aulakh developed a web portal-cum-application called ‘Security Net’ which was adopted by governments of Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh during state assembly elections on the recommendation of the Election Commission of India.
