Leave Mizoram out of Myanmar border fencing plan: CM Lalduhoma

AIZAWL: Mizoram CM Lalduhoma reiterated on Saturday that the state should be left out if Centre undertakes fencing of the 1,643km border with Myanmar.

This comes after state’s influential NGOCC decided to go ahead with a planned protest on Feb 21 against the proposed fencing and ending a Free Movement Regime (FMR) between the two countries.

FMR allows residents on both sides to move 16km inside either country without papers.

“State govt is opposed to a fence along the 510km-long Mizoram-Myanmar border and wants FMR to stay. The present border was demarcated by British as part of its divide-and-rule policy, so it is an imposed border. Brothers are divided in order to ensure we will never be a large nation. Our undying dream is to reunite under a single administrative unit,” the CM told an NGOCC delegation led by chairman Lalhmachhuana.

Lalduhoma said he recently met PM Narendra Modi and home minister Amit Shah and apprised them of the state’s stand.

CM said he urged Shah — who had announced the fencing plan a few weeks ago — not to construct a fence on Mizoram side even if the Manipur section of the border is fenced. “In view of the responses I received in Delhi, I feel we have nothing to worry about,” CM told NGOCC leaders.

With the chorus against the move growing louder, leaders of key tribal organisations from Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Assam, including governing Nationalist Democratic Party (NDP)came together in Dimapur on Friday to press for reconsideration of the decis

ion. The meet in the Nagaland town was attended by the state’s political parties, including governing Nationalist Democratic Party (NDP).

A 12-member committee was formed to push the cause. According to a draft representation readied for PM Modi, the moves to do away with FMR and put up a fence “is impractical and dehumanising to people on both sides of the border, but may also diminish the prospects for peace in the restive region”.
