not hardik pandya! zaheer khan wants rohit sharma to lead india in 2024 t20 world cup
The 2024 edition of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup is set to take place in the West Indies and the USA next year. According to reports, the tournament will start on June 4, and the final is scheduled for June 30. India is the No. 1 team in the T20I rankings and will be one of the favourites to win the title. But it won’t be easy as wickets in the West Indies offer a unique set of challenges, and also, teams like Australia, England, South Africa, New Zealand, and Pakistan are a force to be reckoned with in the shortest format of the game, along with the hosts, the West Indies, which has won two T20 World Cup titles in the past.
Even though there are still more than six months left for the T20 World Cup to start, talks about the tournament have already begun, and during a discussion on Cricbuzz, former India pacer Zaheer Khan, who played a very big role in India’s ODI World Cup in 2011 under MS Dhoni’s leadership, said that star Mumbai Indians batter Rohit Sharma should lead the Men in Blue in the T20 World Cup next year.
Rohit hasn’t played a T20I match for India since November 10, 2022, and there are question marks over his T20I future for India, but according to Zaheer, who has closely worked with Rohit with the Mumbai Indians, the 36-year-old cricketer could be an ideal option because of his vast experience.

Not Hardik Pandya! Gautam Gambhir Picks India’s Captain For 2024 T20 World Cup
“Well, because the T20 World Cup is just around the corner and there is not a lot of time, you have to go in with experience. You will have to give that preference to the experienced guy, and I will not be surprised if they decide to go ahead with Rohit Sharma himself,” Zaheer told Cricbuzz.
“He’s the guy who has been around for a while. He understands handling situations, handling pressure, and all those kinds of aspects. You still have time for all these other names that are on that list to take the mantle forward. It’s just around six months (for the World Cup to begin). You have a big tournament like the IPL in between, which will give them enough time to prepare. So, it’s either going to be Rohit Sharma or, depending on how Hardik goes about his rehab, his comeback. The challenge is that he’s not going to be playing that many games,” he added.
In the absence of Rohit, Hardik Pandya has led India in T20Is this year, and in his absence, world No. 1 T20I batter Suryakumar Yadav was given the responsibility for the ongoing T20I series against Australia, and he also delivered the goods by winning the first two matches.
