bangladesh fans throw bottles at indian womens football team after coin toss controversy saff u19 final
The SAFF U-19 Women’s Championship match between India and Bangladesh on Thursday ended with controversy after the winner was decided by a coin toss. Fans in the stadium threw bottles and stones onto the ground, prompting the officials to ask Indian players to leave the field but not the ground.
It was India who were declared the winners after the toss, infuriating the Bangladesh players and the crowd over the referee’s unconventional method of deciding the result. After some deliberation by the match officials and organisers, and consultation with the Indian team, Bangladesh and India were declared as joint winners.
The match was a thrilling encounter that went right down to the last minute of the game. India led for most of the game after Sibani Devi Nongmeikapam scored in the eighth minute. However, Sagorika’s equaliser in the third minute of stoppage time sent the match into a penalty shootout.

India were found wanting for missing the chances to add to Devi’s goal, and also staying defensive in the final minutes to hold onto a one-goal lead. However, Bangladesh drew parity in the 93rd minute. There is no extra time in the U-19 circuit the match hence went into penalties straight away.
Both teams converted all their five penalties to send the shootout into a sudden death. After six more kicks by each side, it was 11-11 with all players on the field having taken a kick. As per FIFA rules, the sudden death must have carried on with the existing players starting from the first penalty-taker. However, the referee decided to settle the result with a coin toss.
Although India initially emerged as winners, upon the organiser’s request, India accepted to share the trophy with Bangladesh, and the two teams were declared as joint winners of the event.

AIFF Acting Secretary General M Satyanarayan’s statement on the coin toss: “India, despite being declared winners after the spin of the coin, decided to accept the officials’ request for sharing the trophy as the situation was simmering and a section of the home fans was found indulging in creating disturbances. Since the security of the players and other team officials is our utmost priority, the AIFF decided to agree to the request of the organisers.”
