The New Orleans Saints will kick off their offseason workout program on Monday, and they’ll do so with a little more depth at cornerback. Saints News Network’s John Hendrix reported that the Saints are bringing back Shemar Jean-Charles, which was confirmed by NewOrleans.Football’s Mike Triplett and Nola.com’s Matt Paras. The deal isn’t signed just yet, but it’s only a matter of time before it’s pushed over the finish line.

Jean-Charles joined the Saints practice squad last November and appeared in three games, making his debut against the Los Angeles Rams. He was promoted to the active roster for the season finale with the Atlanta Falcons. Jean-Charles mainly helped out on special teams where he ran with the kickoff coverage and punt teams, though he did play a handful of snaps on defense against Atlanta.

What was most notable about Jean-Charles’ addition was how far beneath the Saints’ usual thresholds for cornerbacks. New Orleans has maintained a strict prototype of 6-foot-1 and 201 pounds with Dennis Allen running their defense, but Jean-Charles was listed at just 5-foot-10 and 184 pounds. His 4.27 Relative Athletic Score was also far off the mark. But the Saints saw something in him to overrule those numbers, and now they’re bringing him back for another chance at winning a roster spot.
