Phivolcs: No tsunami alert raised after 6.6 magnitude earthquake in Papua New Guinea

MANILA, Philippines — There is no threat of a tsunami to the Philippines following a magnitude 6.6 earthquake that shook Papua New Guinea on Tuesday, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said. In an advisory, the state seismologist said that the temblor occurred at 5:47 a.m. near north of Papua New Guinea. It had a depth of focus of 44 kilometers. “No destructive tsunami threat exists based on available data,” Phivolcs said. “This is for information purposes only and there is no tsunami threat to the Philippines from this earthquake,” it added.
