Severe heatwave alert for four states in next few days, says Weather Department

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Friday issued a heatwave warning for various regions across the country.

In its weather bulletin, the IMD said that areas in East and South peninsular India would likely experience a continuation of heatwave to severe heatwave conditions for the next five days.

The IMD said that the regions which would experience severe heatwave conditions include Gangetic West Bengal along with pockets of Bihar, Jharkhand, and Odisha. Similarly, heatwave conditions will likely prevail in Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, Konkan and Goa.

It predicted a rise in maximum temperatures by 2-3°C over East India in the next two days, and over Maharashtra and many parts of southern peninsular India in the next five days.

The IMD predicted spells of rainfall, accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds in the western Himalayan region and the plains of Northwest India from April 26 to 29 and from April 26 to 28, respectively. It also predicted a similar weather pattern for Central India on April 26 and 27.

The IMD bulletin predicted heavy rainfall in Northeast India from April 28 to April 30, which would cause potential flooding and landslides.

The weather body advised residents to remain prepared for any contingencies and follow safety measures.

Meanwhile, the east and south peninsular regions witnessed heatwaves in the past 24 hours. Additionally, hailstorms were reported in isolated regions of Maharashtra and East Madhya Pradesh, the weather body said.

Heatwave conditions have been prevailing over Odisha since April 15 and over Gangetic West Bengal since April 17, the IMD said in the bulletin.
