Smart tips to create your own greenhouse garden: Location is key, choose the right plants to start
If you have always dreamt of growing your own kitchen garden or even fruits right in your backyard or on your terrace, this might be the best time to go for it and create your own green space in the house. Like any new venture, greenhouse gardening requires patience and a lot of experimentation along the way.
Just remember to keep in mind some savvy tips and avoid any pitfalls before you venture into greenhouse gardening. Manjari Sharma, interior designer at Wagma Designs, shares some unique ideas to convert your open space into a beautiful green haven. Follow these basic guidelines, and in no-time you will have your own eco-zone in the comfort of your home.
Choose the right location: Do you have a south-facing area which gets maximum sunlight, even during winters? This is the ideal location for your greenhouse garden. Remember that placing your greenhouse in a heavily shaded area can deprive it of sunlight, which can hinder the growth of plants. Avoid areas that are vulnerable during strong winds or where water tends to accumulate, as these can cause damage to the structure.
Select the right structure: The excitement to get your first greenhouse garden is good enough to get the ball rolling. However, take care to invest in a structure that suits your space. You can choose from freestanding greenhouses and even a mini greenhouse to start with. Consider the size, material and ventilation options before taking the plunge. While taking care of the budget, make sure not to compromise on durability.
Create the ideal environment: This involves making sure to monitor the temperature, humidity and ventilation inside your greenhouse. Excessive heat and lack of ventilation can cause humidity that may lead to the growth of mould and pests. Bubble wrap or double-glazed panels can help in insulating your greenhouse.
Choose the right plants: The wishlist of plants is never-ending, but stay practical and zero in on those that thrive in a greenhouse environment, while matching your vision. Tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, herbs and certain flowering plants are great options, but do research the needs of each plant, such as the sunlight, water and temperature they require to flourish. Remember not to overcrowd your greenhouse and leave room for plants to grow and spread out.
Taking care of your plants: Maintaining your plants requires care and attention. Follow a regular watering schedule that is based on the varieties of your plants and the climatic conditions. A simple watering hose may do the job or you may decide to invest in a drip irrigation system. Fertilise your plants to give them essential nutrients. Don’t overwater your plants and monitor soil moisture levels. Regularly inspect your plants for signs of pests or disease and use organic pesticides whenever possible. Consider incorporating composting and rainwater harvesting to do your bit for the environment.
Community engagement: It’s a great idea to engage with the local or online community of gardeners, especially if you’re starting out. You are sure to gain knowledge and resources from their experiences. Look out for gardening workshops and online forums to benefit from their collective expertise. Don’t get discouraged by setbacks and celebrate your successes, however small or big. Before you know it, you will be harvesting fresh vegetables or admiring the vibrant blooms in your greenhouse garden.
