First baseman and designated hitter Ji-Man Choi agreed to a one-year split contract with the Mets worth $3.5 million, according to Yonhap News Agency, which citing the player’s agents as the source.
Agency also reported that Ji-Man Choi drew interest from Blue Jays, Rangers, White Sox, Nationals and Padres, plus three teams from Japan.
Choi, 32, also updated his Instagram account on Friday to show he had joined the Mets.
A left-handed hitter, Choi appeared in 39 games last season for the Pirates and Padres and owned a .163/.239/.385 slash line with six homers and 13 RBIs. His best season came in 2019 with the Tampa Bay Rays when he batterd .261 with hit 16 homers and 63 RBIs.
He likely will compete in spring training with DJ Stewart, a lefty bat vying for playing time at DH.
Choi played six games with the Yankees in 2017, when he batted .267 with two homers and five RBIs.
Choi once claimed he’d been feeling the presence of ghosts while he was recovering from back surgery. He claims to have woken up once with a spirit on his chest that was heavy enough to make his bed slump.
“I was scared at first, so I didn’t want to open my eyes,” Choi told MLB.com. “I dealt with that a lot more times after that.”
Choi told his story after having an encounter with a spirit in his hotel room when the Angels were in Milwaukee for a May 2016 series against the Brewers. He says a ghost was in his bed at the Pfister Hotel, which is known for being haunted.
He also claims ghosts have hugged him, crawled behind him and that he’s heard them making noises right next to him.
“I’ve seen ghosts plenty of times,” he told in his MLB.com. “‘I’ve dealt with it so many times, I don’t really care anymore.”
