With food inflation still in the double digits, shoppers already have a lot on their minds, let alone potentially contaminated frozen food.
But Tesco recalled its discount own-brand peas yesterday due to fears of a ‘possible contamination with an unknown type of berry’.
A recall doesn’t mean the product is taken off supermarket shelves (that’s when it’s ‘withdrawn’).
Instead, shoppers are urgently asked by retailers to return the product.
The recall was announced yesterday by the Food Standards Agency (FSA), which makes sure food is safe to eat in England, Wales and Northern Ireland.
Food safety officials warn that the Growers Harvest Garden Peas getting into contact with the mystery berry ‘may make this product unsafe to eat’.

‘Tesco is recalling the above product,’ the agency said. ‘If you have bought any of the above product do not eat it.
‘Instead, return it to the store from where it was bought for a full refund.
In a notice to customers, Tesco said ‘various batches’ of Growers Harvest Garden Peas 900g are being recalled until December 27.
‘Please do not consume this product and return it to store where a full refund will be given, the company said.
‘No receipt is required.
‘Tesco apologises to our customers for any inconvenience caused.’
The company has asked stores to remove the batches from sale and display recall notices at point-of-sale.
The affected bags are 900g and their respective best-before dates and batch codes are as follows:
- January 2025: Batch codes 23196, 23197, 23198, 23199, 23200
- February 2025: Batch codes 23237, 23238, 23239, 23240
- March 2025: Batch codes 23256, 23257, 23258, 23259, 23260, 23261
- April 2025: Batch codes 23275, 23276, 23277
