Gardaí are investigating an attack on a man in Dublin city centre last night in which the victim appeared to be hit with a machete.
A video of the alleged incident posted on social media appears to show a man armed with machete-like weapon hitting another man standing on the street.
Gardaí confirmed they are investigating an assault that occurred on Talbot Street, Dublin 1, Sunday 26th November 2023.
“Gardaí in Store Street received report of an assaulted male at approximately 9:25pm and attended the scene.”
“A man in his 30s was conveyed to the Mater University Hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.”
Officers also carried out a technical examination of the scene.
In the video clip an attacker appears to deliver blows to his victim’s arms and legs and a pool of blood is visible on the footpath after the attack ended.
The man stayed on his feet and briefly grappled with another assailant after being punched in the head as well.
He was attacked after the man carrying the weapon chased another man during the chaotic scene before walking back down and launching the assault.
The victim managed to stay on his feet and is seen in the clip making his way back towards the Connolly Station direction after the attack ends.
The attackers are then seen sprinting down Gardiner Street against on-coming traffic.
The victim of the stabbing has been identified as a 36-year-old Eastern European man.
Garda investigations have established that he was stabbed in the leg during the attack last night.
The weapon used in the attack has been recovered by gardaí but no arrests have yet been made by investigating officers at Store Street.
It is understood that the victim who lost a lot of blood in the incident has been living in Ireland for a number of years.
The frightening incident came despite a massive garda presence in Dublin City centre since last Thursday’s knife attack at Parnell Square in which a woman and three children were injured.
Rioting followed the incident on Thursday evening with cars, buses and a Luas tram being burned out while a number of shops were looted.
Talbot Street has also been the scene of other high-profile assaults this year including one in which American tourist Stephen Termini suffered head injuries.
