virat kohli reminds wankhede crowd hardik pandya plays for india; asks fans to cheer not boo mi skipper: watch
After telling the crowd at Oval to not boo Smith Smith during the 2019 World Cup and then asking supporters in Delhi to end the jeering towards Naveen-ul-Haq in the 2023 World Cup, Virat Kohli asked Mumbaikers to stop booing Hardik Pandya during the 2024 Indian Premier League (IPL) clash between Mumbai Indians and Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) at the iconic Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Thursday (April 11).
The negative reception Hardik has received in the 2024 IPL continued during the MI-RCB clash before an intervention from Kohli. When Hardik walked out to bat after Rohit Sharma’s dismissal during the home team’s run-chase, Kohli was seen asking Mumbaiers inside the stadium to stop booing Hardik and instead cheer for him. In a video posted by a fan from inside the stadium, the ex-RCB skipper could be seen giving a reminder to the fans that the MI skipper plays for India.

Virat’s actions had an immediate impact as the mood around the Wankhede Stadium quickly changed. As Hardik prepared to face the first ball of his innings from Will Jacks, loud cheers of ‘Hardik Hardik’ were heard inside the venue. The MI skipper responded by smashing the first delivery with a six.

For those unversed, MI’s decision to remove Rohit and appoint Hardik as captain ahead of the 2024 IPL has earned enormous backlash. The star all-rounder rejoined the franchise after spending two seasons with the Gujarat Titans (GT) in a sensational trade deal.
Talking about the match, MI thrashed RCB by seven wickets and chased down a target of 197 with 27 balls to spare. Jasprit Bumrah took a sensational five-wicket haul for MI with figures of 5-21 before Ishan Kishan’s 34-ball 69 and Suryakumar Yadav’s knock of 52 in 19 balls helped the hosts cruise to their second win of the season.
