Commuters faced potential travel chaos in the capital this morning after one of the country’s busiest railway stations was evacuated and another saw emergency services rushing to the scene of a “fire alert”.

Crews from London Fire Brigade were called to Tottenham Hale station in north London to deal with the emergency alert, according to Transport for London (TfL).

Waterloo station was also evacuated on Monday (November 27) with commuters taking to social media to share footage of crowds forced to leave the busy rail hub at the height of rush hour in the capital.

A spokesman for Network Rail, which manages London Waterloo, said a fault triggered the station’s fire alarm system.

He added the evacuation alert was cancelled within minutes and train services have been “slightly disrupted” due to a problem with a train around Vauxhall, south London, and not because of the IT glitch.

Anyone who wants to check the status of a service should check the National Rail website or call 03457 48 49 50.

A spokesman for British Transport Police (BTP) said Waterloo station was evacuated just after 8.30am after the fire alarm was activated.

He added: “It was a false alarm and the station was promptly reopened.”

BTP’s spokesman said the fire alarm at Tottenham Hale was activated at about 8.15am and the incident is being attended to by London Fire Brigade (LFB).

A spokesman for LFB said: “London Fire Brigade responded to [a] report of a smell of smoke at Tottenham Hale Station this morning.

“Following investigation, firefighters established there was no fire.”

He added that the Brigade was called at 8.08am and the incident was over for firefighters by 8.56am.
