Queen Mary of Denmark has expressed her condolences after the Bondi attack that left six people dead and 12 injured.
The Danish royal wrote a letter to Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, sharing her “solidarity and concern” over the tragic events which unfolded on April 13.
Albanese told Kyle Sandilands and Jackie ‘O’ Henderson live on-air on Monday that he had woken up to a “lovely” letter penned by Australian-born Mary.
Queen Mary of Denmark shared a letter with the Australian PM following the attack in Westfield Bondi Junction.
“This is a national tragedy that is affecting everyone in our great nation. I had a lovely letter I woke up to this morning from Queen Mary in Denmark, a letter just expressing her solidarity and concern at this,” the prime minister said on KIIS FM this morning.
“We’ve had world leaders reaching out, expressing their condolences and solidarity and support with Australia at this difficult time.
“And today of course, flags around the nation will fly at half-mast in order to just show our sympathy for these victims, these young lives lost in this just senseless act of violence.”
Albanese has declined to share the full contents of the letter, which has been deemed a private correspondence of the PM.
Mary was born in Tasmania and lived in the Sydney area before meeting her husband, King Frederik, at a bar in Sydney in 2000.
Mary expressed her ‘solidarity and concern’ in the letter.
Mary is one of several royals who have expressed their distress and sadness over the Bondi Junction attack.
Over the weekend, members of the British royal family revealed they were “horrified to hear of the tragic stabbing” which unfolded inside a Sydney shopping centre on Saturday.
Prince William and Kate broke their social media silence, weeks after announcing the Princess of Wales’s cancer battle at the end of March, to share their thoughts about “the terrible events in Sydney”.
The couple put out a rare personal message about 10pm AEDT, signed off casually with “W & C”, which signifies the post was written by the couple themselves.
“We are shocked and saddened by the terrible events in Sydney earlier today,” they began in their short statement.
William and Kate shared a statement following the attack in Bondi.
“Our thoughts are with all those affected, including the loved ones of those lost and the heroic emergency responders who risked their own lives to save others.”
King Charles, who has visited the Bondi area a number of times in the past, also offered a formal message of support to the Australian people following the tragedy.
“My wife and I were utterly shocked and horrified to hear of the tragic stabbing incident in Bondi,” the monarch said in the statement issued by Buckingham Palace on Saturday night.
“Our hearts go out to the families and loved ones of those who have been so brutally killed during such a senseless attack.”
