  • He and his girlfriend had masterminded a plan to tie the knot in Colorado
  • But the couple’s dream day was shattered when the ceremony was hijacked

A couple who planned to elope have been left furious after the bride-to-be’s family gatecrashed the wedding and ‘ruined’ their special day.

The unnamed man, 26, took to Reddit under the ‘wedding shaming’ thread with a post that was titled ‘elopement disaster and wedding crashers.’

He explained that he and his girlfriend of seven years had masterminded a plan to tie the knot in Colorado to avoid inviting her ‘crazy family.’

But their dream day was shattered when the ceremony was hijacked by difficult relatives.

The unnamed man, 26, took to Reddit under the ‘wedding shaming’ thread with a post that was titled ‘elopement disaster and wedding crashers’

In the post, which was shared earlier this week, the frustrated groom laid bare the details of the family feud.

He explained that he and his wife-to-be, also 26, had planned a quick elopement after finding out she was pregnant.

They planned to take just four friends with them to Colorado and went about coordinating the perfect day.

‘We rented an RV, hired a photographer and videographer to shoot our entire trip, rented a massive Airbnb on the mountain with an indoor hot tub and beautiful views. It was perfect!’ he explained.

‘Well, almost perfect. We strategically picked Colorado because of one, the views and two, it was so far from our families.

‘My wife has a massive family and paying for all them alone in a local wedding would’ve been more than our entire elopement.

‘I should add, her family is crazy. She is fully aware of it and was excited to elope so she didn’t have to deal with the repercussions of her mother and sisters. She was raised in a house with a manipulative addict. The idea that “family is all you will ever have” was burned into her brain at a very young age.

‘Her mom knew if she didn’t all her kids would abandon her. And after years of pill abuse she’s brain fried. Having a conversation with her is difficult. She doesn’t know what is going on most of the time.’

The couple made it to Colorado and were getting ready for the wedding when the bombshell dropped that the bride’s ‘entire family… drove over a thousand miles to crash our wedding.’

The man revealed that the blushing bride had told her youngest sister about their nuptials just a week earlier, which he now admitted was ‘eloping mistake 101.’

He explained: ‘We really didn’t expect them to be crazy enough to crash a wedding that was strategically planned to avoid them and their baggage.

‘We also didn’t account her youngest sister is still brainwashed from the “family is all you have” mentality. So she convinced her whole immediate family to crash it.’

The groom said that the group followed them to the venue and made the wedding all about the ‘importance of family’ with the bride’s mom even interrupting the ceremony to offer prayers for them.

Following the vows, the uninvited guests ‘insisted’ that the group should have a party.

‘My pregnant wife proceeds to tell them why she can’t drink. And immediately everything went much further downhill,’ he wrote.

‘Her mom had found a new target in our unborn child. The future of manipulated children who would never be able to leave her side. She was thrilled.’

The disgruntled husband revealed that the couple asked the family to leave with little success, adding: ‘We spent the next two days after our wedding tending to her mother’s needs for attention.’

‘The photographer and videographer stopped doing photo and video because “everyone was looking miserable.”‘

‘After all was said and done we had a ruined ceremony, 140 pictures, 0 video and no after movie. We didn’t get to go to the ice skating rink, no ice sculptures, didn’t get to go to Denver, and our first dinner as a married couple was eaten separately.

‘We were out a ton of money, stressed out, didn’t get half of what we’d paid for and didn’t turn in our marriage certificate. We still have time to turn it in but we’re both so angry at the situation we took time to calm down before we did anything else.

‘Her mother and sisters almost cost us a marriage with zero remorse. It’s been a stressful month and I’m just glad it’s over.’

The Reddit post was quickly flooded with comments as one person wrote: ‘Go to couples’ therapy asap. This will be your marriage.’

Another person added: ‘Your wife needs therapy now. This will get worse when the baby arrives without serious boundaries – and actions to maintain them.’

A third person wrote: ‘People will only do to you and your wife what you allow them to.’

‘I am so sorry this happened to you. I hope you and your wife can have a “redo” at some point,’ a fourth person added.

Another commenter wrote: ‘You all need to leave. There I said it. YOU should have said it. Call the police. Private party. Get OUT. Your wife needs therapy to cut the cord with them, or this is your life now.’

‘You both need to learn how to say no. Firmly, without remorse, without backtracking. That will alleviate a lot of these issues,’ one follower added.

Another person wrote: ‘Ah, Jesus, what a nightmare. Not going to pile on about your wife’s family dynamics, but can you perhaps have a redo? Just you two and the photographer and the amazing scenery. You should have photos you love.’

One person commented: ‘I’d would’ve had them forcibly removed if they didn’t leave voluntarily. You both should’ve stood up for yourselves. You have set yourself up for misery.

‘Good luck – and consider going no contact or very limited contact with these people. Their behavior is unacceptable.’

The husband responded to some comments as he agreed calling the police was an option but that it would have led to his wife’s mother getting locked up and needing to be bailed out.

He said he decided against it because it would have ‘stressed out my wife even more, and in turn could’ve caused permanent damage to our baby.’

He added: ‘Seemed easier to get drunk and sit in a nice indoor hot tub with our friends than to play damage control with an overgrown toddler.’
